sChutzhund Club
Welcome to BASC!
The Bay Area Schutzhund Club was founded in 2017 with the intent of bringing together a community of people who are passionate about our dogs and our sport. Our members come from across the San Francisco Bay Area, and range from experienced handlers with decades of experience titling and competing with their dogs, to newcomers who are learning the sport with their first dog.
We welcome prospective members interested in joining to come visit our club!
What is Schutzhund?
Schutzhund is the German word for "protection dog," and is currently known competitively as IGP and previously as IPO. It is a dog sport that tests a dog's tracking, obedience, and protection skills, and evaluates if a dog has the appropriate traits and characteristics of a good working dog.
It is intended to demonstrate a dog’s intelligence and utility. As a working trial, Schutzhund measures the dog’s mental stability, endurance, structural efficiencies, ability to scent, willingness to work, courage, and trainability.
This working dog sport offers an opportunity for dog owners to train their dog and compete with each other for recognition of both the handler’s ability to train and the dog’s ability to perform as required. It is a sport enjoyed by persons of varied professions, who join together in a camaraderie born of their common interest in working with their dogs. Persons of all ages and conditions of life including those with disabilities enjoy Schutzhund as a sport.
